  • Tivo Upgrade help

    Hello,
I want to say thanks for all of the great info on this site. I have a 40 hour series 2 Tivo. I was getting the power up screen on my Tivo .It would just keep powering up then turning off then repeating . From what I read it was probable my Hard Drive .I bought a new Seagate and did the code that was giving to me.

    mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdX (/dev/hdY) | mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -xzpi - /dev/hdZ (/dev/hdZZ)

It went well and it said I had I think it was 235 hours .I put a 250 gig drive in. I installed the drive back in my Tivo . It will not boot up ? I just get the green flicker again and again. I tried some different jumper settings thinking that was it. I was wondering if I should try the process again .Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Cheese

If you are starting from a bad drive, then copying from the bad to a new drive isn't really going to solve your problem I'm sorry to report. If you'd like us to get you up and running, feel free to email us.

      Thanks Jeff

      Hello Jeff,

I was able to get a image off of my other Tivo and do an upgrade. I did the upgrade and it went well. I put the drive in and I was amazed it was still giving me the powering up screen ? I am thinking from what I have read that this is probably my power supply ? I am thinking a about ordering one. What do you think? I did the upgrade 3 times and tried all of the jumpers thinking it was that.I could see the video saying powering up but it was greyed out some but not sure if this is normal. I know that video going out can be a sign of power supply going out from what I have read on the forums. Please let me know what you think.

      Thanks,

      Cheese

Sounds like a bad drive image to me. Unless you've started with a known working drive image, there's really no reason to suspect the power supply.
That's all there is to it!

            Update

            Hello,

Well I received a new drive and tried again and put an image onto the drive. I still could not get the drive to boot. I am getting video but will not boot (Stuck on Powering Up). I took my other Tivo the one I got the image from and put the new drive in that one. It did boot and seemed to be working fine. I am thinking again that it is the Power Supply . I am ordering one from you guys and if it does not work out I am not sure what to try . Thanks for all of your help. From what I have read it seems that this would have been the Hard Drive ? I think this could have been the exception. The good news if this works I can get my programs back from my old Tivo hard drive and get more space .

            Thanks,

            Cheese

Well, tell us what happens. Being stuck on "Powering Up" means a hard drive in well more than 95% of cases, but you could be one of the ones where it's something else. Let's just hope it's the power supply, and not the motherboard.

              Report back please!

                Hello,

I started to think about you message and decided to try something. I took the power supply out of my other Tivo since i had one coming . I put it in my other Tivo and I am sad to say you were right .It still will not power up. I guess it is something else ? I think I am at that point that I will prolly have to buy another Tivo. I sure did think I was doing something ahead of the curve fixing this Tivo myself but it just did not work out. If you have any ideas please let me know. I will probably be sending the power supply back I purchased from you. Thanks so much for your help and your great site.

One question are the dual tuner Tivos Sata(Dual Tuner TiVo DVR TCD649080 with 80 Hours of Recording Capacity) Just wondering if I can use this drive I bought with a dual tuner Tivo if I buy one?
                Thanks,

No - the TCD649080 units use PATA drives, not SATA drives.
