  • Boot CD can't find CD Drive!?

    Hi,

When I boot from the CD, it loads linux but then fails to detect the CD drive.

After that linux is useless since it can't find any commands.

The CD drive is Master on the secondary IDE channel.

The drive is working perfectly and was the same drive on which I burned the CD.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Ed

Yes, it boots to a linux prompt. I guess that's the same as the Weaknees prompt.

It boots from the same CD drive it can't find after boot.

But at that point it's dead in the water. It won't accept any commands b/c it can't find the necessary source.

      Thanks for your help,

      Ed

Does the prompt actually say "weaknees#"?

          Hi,

          No. The prompt was "sh-2.05b#".

Just before getting the above prompt it tried five times to find the CD drive and then gave the message "No CD-ROM found".

After that, I'm not surprised it didn't get to the WK prompt since it couldn't read any commands from the drive.

          Thanks for your help,

              Hi,

              Here's a bit more info.

I set up a second PC and the boot CD works and DOES go to the WK prompt. That's as far as I've gotten so far but I'm now confident that there was nothing wrong with the CD itself.

I still don't know why it wouldn't work on the first PC. The bios obviously sees the CD drive or the WK CD would never be able to boot. But the linux software just can't find the drive.

              Thanks for your help,

              Ed

                Hi,

Not sure what you mean by that. It is the ISO file I downloaded from your site and burned.

See my previous post saying that it works on a second PC.

                Thanks,

                Ed

OK - ours would boot to a "weaknees#" prompt. But in any event, if it works in another PC, use that. Some hardware is definitely incompatible. It's rare, but it happens.

Hello, I just wanted to post a reply in this thread for the benefit of anyone else experiencing this issue.

Try the Weaknees boot ISO with SATA support even if you are not using SATA drives. It worked for me. I was having this same issue of the CD booting to a certain point and then Linux losing the CD Rom drive with the older Weaknees ISO for series 2. That CD booted fine on my Socket A (Athlon XP) PC with NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 but not on a EPoX EP-8VTAI A with VIA KT880 chipset.

                      ISO Link: http://www.weaknees.com/weaknees_sata.iso

Background: I had successfully upgraded my 2 stock 40 hour Tivo units (540040) with PATA 160gb Seagate DB35 drives earlier this year. I ended up needing to RMA one of the drives due to failing sectors (happened after a power spike in the house). I had not destroyed the image on the original 40gb drive so I slipped that back in and was back in business until my RMA replacement drive arrived. I was struggling for several days to re-upgrade that unit until I figured out that I had used the SATA version boot CD. DOH! Booted with that CD and now I am back up ~174 hours happiness.

I hope this info will help save someone else from the headaches I had this past week.

I just wanted to say that ghtech is right. I had the same issue with the CD-Rom and using the SATA ISO saved the day. Thanks.
