Mount FAT drive for backup not working

    Mount FAT drive for backup not working

    This is driving me CRAZY!!! I continue to get an error that says:
    FAT: bogus lgoical sector size 55438
    VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev 16:40
    UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted

    WHY???

    I have formatted two different perfectly good hard drives in Windows.
    I have formatted both drives using Windows and a 3rd party program.
    I have done a FULL format every time.
    I have created both FAT and FAT32 partitions
    I have created the FAT32 partitions out of the entire drive AND I've created partitions of varying sizes on both hard drives (ranging from 2GB to 32GB).
    My drives are 28GB and 120GB.
    I've attempted to make the backup in two different computers.
    I've changed the IDE cables in both computers while troubleshooting

    I've done everything right and still MFSTools does not recognize the hard drive with the FAT32 partition on it.

    I have the drives connected as such:
    hda - Tivo Drive 1
    hdb - Tivo Drive 2
    hdc - CD Drive
    hdd - FAT32 backup drive

    This isn't my first time around upgrading and backing up a Tivo but it is my first time with this problem. What should I be looking at?

    PS - if I ignore the FAT error that I get from MFSTools and proceed with the backup it fails.

    What size is the FAT partition?

    What command are you using to mount it?

    What error do you get when the backup fails?

      Thanks for the reply. I thought for sure I didn't miss anything. Sorry. Here we go.

      Partitions:

      FAT 2GB
      FAT32 - 2GB
      FAT32 - 4GB
      FAT32 - 32GB
      FAT32 - 28GB
      FAT32 - 120GB

      To mount:

      mount /dev/hdd /mnt

      Backup Error:

      Backup Failed: /mnt/backup.bak: Success

      The backup process begins, makes it about 8% of the way through and then I get the above.

      How do I take on this challenge and win?

        So the mount sounds right - I think the problem is the source drive for the backup is corrupt. Does it boot?

          I have two drives in my Tivo. When they are both in place the Tivo boots up fine. I downloaded a bunch of updates, set up my wireless network and then pulled the drives to make a backup.

          Why would you say the source drives are the problem if the target for the backup (hdd) isn't mounting?

            I don't really get how you know it's not mounting. What you wrote above sounds like it's mounting to me - what do you get if after the mount command you do:

            cd /mnt

            and then:

            ls

            Do you see a list of files?

            When you try to make the backup, are you using both drives together?

              I will try the cmd /mnt command.
              I am using both drives for the backup.
              The reason I think the mount is failing is because of the error I noted in the original post that states a valid FAT filesystem isn't found.

              Let me ask you this. If I booted into a Ubuntu CD could I make the backup that way? Do you know how?

                It can be done with Ubuntu, but it's pretty complicated to get that far.

                If you give us more info about exactly what's happening, we can help more.
