Swapping hard drives on series 3 with external drive

I havd a series 3 HD Tivo model number TCD652160 with a tivo verified external SATA drive connected. There is a bad board in the recorder and Tivo has sent me a new machine. I am wondering if I can switch the hard drive from one machine to another so that I can keep my recordings.

If not, what is the best way to transfer the recordings?

You can't do it. Unless you can access the recordings from the 'bad' TiVo, they are lost.

You can move it, but the recordings are gone. Those were married to the drive in the old machine, so there's no way to resurrect them at this point.

Been here a long time . . .
