can't get external drive to work

I have a series 3 hd. I purchased an external drive and case (1tb samsung) plugged it in and first I tried holding pause and then pressing 62 and that diddnt work. When the TiVo finally booted up I got the external drive recognized screen would you like to set it up now? I said yes and it says it is unsupported and doesn't say why. How can I make this work? If I have to should I swap the internal drive for the drive I just Purchased?

That's fine - just OK the fact that it's unsupported and it'll guide you through getting it connected.
