    Linux n00b needs help

    Hey guys, sorry that this is probably gonna be an idiot question. I'm working on putting my new tivo drive in and at the step where I boot to linux and backup my drive.
    I get the LILO screen when booting from the weaknees boot CD and then press enter to start booting. Then my computer just reboots. I was under the impression that linux was on the boot CD, but my guess is that I have to install it on my comp then boot from CD...is that correct?

    Nope - the problem is most likely that your computer isn't compatible with the CD. Do you have another PC you can try?

      hm, tried it on a different comp and got to:

      uncompressing linux...

      crc error

      --system halted

      ideas?

        Nope - pretty strange. Over the years, I'm sure these CDs have been used on tens of thousands of PCs around the country. Are you sure it's not a bad CD?

          hmmm, well i got it working and got 63% thru restoring the drive when the process failed (I think the hard drive overheated). The problem i am having now is that it says i have a bad block so I'm going to return the drive and try again with a different one.

          Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it works out :-)

            OK - any idea why the CD had failed?

              I don't know why the crc error happenned, but in the second computer I tried I ran out of memory. I finally got it to work with the 3rd computer but the linux commands are not my strong suit so it took a few tries to get it right. Has anybody ever tried to create an automated script for the process? jw, thanks again!

                We really haven't tried. These tools really cater to the DIY audience. For those that want a more turnkey solution, we generally recommend our fully-formatted TiVo upgrade kits.

                  boot cd instructions

                  You really should.

                  There needs to be more detail added to your upgrade instructions anyway, like typing in 'linux' at the first prompt - that took me a few minutes to figure out because I'm not a programmer. Someone needs to go through it step-by-step and get ALL of the commands in the instructions.
