  • HR10-250 MFSTool CD - Backup failed /mnt/backup.bak: Success)

Using the 'Weaknees CD 'on a CD drive (primary IDE cable master)

and 2 250GB drives on secondary IDE cable with each drive set as Original Drive pins set to Master New Drive pins set to Slave as directed...

I tried the mount command below:
    mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt

    and it responded with
    FAT: bogus cluster size 0
VFS: Cant find a valid FAT filesystem
    ...

    QUESTION A: Why is that?

Then I went ahead and issued the backup command:
    mfsbackup etc, etc, etc

To which is came back and said:
    Source Drive is 1 Hours
    Upgraded to 282 hours
Backup Image will be 1 hours
    Backup failed /mnt/backup.bak: Success)

QUESTION B: Why does it say failed and success in the same line? What specifically happened? Did it do a backup somehow?

So then i just continued with the directions (such as mfsbackup -Tao and mfsretore -s -127 ...) and put the newer drive into the hr10-250 and it did copy all of the recordings and settings and works.

QUESTION C: Why would a backup command fail but the copy commands work? If the second backup command worked for me then what happened to the first one?

QUESTION D: If the mount command failed then why did any of this work?

QUESTION E: Do i use these exact commands again to go from a 250 original drive to a larger drive such as 750gb or 1T drive and retain the recordings? Or do i need to adjust the parameters like the -127 or something to go from a smaller drive to a larger drive?

    Thank you

A - maybe there's no FAT partition on the C drive?

B - The "1 hours" part likely means you have a bad TiVo drive. The "failed" part is because it can't write, since /mnt/backup.bak isn't valid since you never really mounted the drive.

C - It just can't write the backup.

D - The backup can still start - that doesn't (yet) involve writing, just reading.

    E - You need to get that C drive mounted first . . .

      Thanks for the reply.

Is it still supposed to have a FAT if its is a tivo drive. If not am I still supposed to mount it?

As I said I tested the other drive and it contained the recordings and worked. No idea why if I cant mount a drive.

Are there some other commands to try and see if I successuly mounted a drive? Like reading the directory maybe? what are those commands?

Again, (once I am successful) do i use these exact commands again to go from a single 250gb original drive to a larger single drive such as 750gb or 1T drive and retain the recordingsand setting? Or do i need to adjust the parameters like the -127 or something to go from a smaller drive to a larger drive?

You Said: "...You don't need to mount the TiVo drives - only a PC drive that you would use for a backup..."

#1 - Oh, ummm, you mean I dont need to mount anything actually because both my drives are Tivo drives and one is a CD rom drive - as fully explained in my first post ???

#2 - Let me see, so I dont mount anything becuause I cant do a backup at all because backups dont get written to the original Tivo drive, correct?

#3 - So I dont do a backup, I dont mount anything and all I do is command it to do the:

        mfsbackup -Tao ... | mfsretore -s -127 ... etc, etc

#4 - Is the backup recommneded due to these process and commands in the instructions may cause a messup/failure/damage on the disk or to make it easy to create a restored hard drive again sometime later?

#5 - You said: "You need to get that C drive mounted first . . ." Based on my new line of thinking I dont understand why you say this so I must be wrong somehere still! uggg!

#6 - Does the Weaknees MFSTool disk we created allow us to look at the the files, delete, edit copy, etc the Tivo disks? If so where would I find a bunch of info about what I can do with your software? I know theres a site that has that MFSTool but not sure how Weaknees modified the software and why its a WeakNees release...

1 - But you are trying to make a backup - you can omit that step and do a direct drive-to-drive copy if you'd like. Just choose those options on the website to get those instructions.

            2 - Your info presumes a backup. See #1.

            3 - Right!

            4 - Yes.

            5 - Right, if you do #4.

            6 - Nope. That's a whole different world.

Ok thanks. Om beginning to undertsand it now. I have all kinds of old tivos that im having fun playing with.

Would that CD allow us to copy from the new directv HR21/HR20 units as well to make copies and the like as well?

No - the HR20/HR21 units don't use these tools at all.
