  • Newbie having hdd swap difficulties :(

    Hello,

I would first like to state that the online interactive instructions are a great idea. I am running into problems though. My setup is as follows:

Series 2 Directv Tivo (Hughes SD-DVR40)

I have removed the factory Tivo drive and have the following setup in my pc:

Primary Master: 200 gig Maxtor for purpose of image storage
    Primary Slave: CD/DVD Rom Drive
Secondary Master: 40 gig original Tivo drive
Secondary Slave: 200 gig drive intended as upgrade for my Hughes SD-DVR40

My goal in this was to take all the information from my factory Tivo hard disk and move it to a bigger disk so I can continue to record the pay per view movies we purchase. I wanted to be sure first that it is possible to move any existing information such as os, and recordings, to the upgrade drive, or if I have to lose the 17 movies currently on the original Tivo drive.

While attempting to follow the instructions I have verified that the hard drives are detected, and the correct size. However, when I tried to start the backup by mounting the hdc (original Tivo drive) I received the following error:

FAT: Bogus logical sector size 30309
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT file system on dev 16:00
    (errors repeat themselves once more)

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but until I can figure it out I'll put the old tivo drive back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    -Chris

You don't need to mount the TiVo drives - only a PC drive that you would use for a backup.

      On Second Though...

After reading some of the other threads it seems that once I create the image for the factory 40 gig drive and restore it onto the new 200 gig drive, it will (from what I read in other posts) only work as a 40 gig and have no additional storage potential.

My new question, is if copying the hard drive to a new larger one isn't possible, I read somewhere that my SD-DVR40 was able to use two hard drives with the use of an additional bracket. My problem though, is I haven't been able to find out anything more than just that. I currently have the drive formatted as FAT32. I tried setting the 200 gig secondary drive to slave and the original drive in the Tivo to master, but it doesn't seem to know the other drive is there. It still says there's no space to record more programs. I am curious if there's something else that needs done to either of the drives to make them work together. The main drive has all my current recordings as well as the Tivo OS 6.3.. incase you need to know the version of the os.

That's just not accurate. As part of the "restore" command, or separately, you can add the extra space on the drive as TiVo partitions so that they'll be recognized.
