Creating a backup image

When in the process of upgrading to a larger HD, and following the instruction (backup of the original drive and restoring to the new drive)does anything gets written to the original drive that will prevent it from working again in the original box if the upgrade does not work?

Nope - it's only reading from the original in that case; not writing to it.
