Blank or Upgrade Hard Drive

I have a Samsung SIR-S4040R box that only displays the grey "Powering Up" screen. I have come to the conclusion that the hard drive is failing, or has failed. I ran the Seagate diagnostic program and the hard drive (Maxtor)passed. I would like to save my programs, if possible. So I have two questions:

1. Can I copy my hard drive using the upgrade instructions and save my shows?

2. If I can, do I need to by the upgrade version of the hard drive or the blank OEM version?

After reading some other posts, I remembered that the diagnostic did state that the drive has some sort of SMART error before I ran the test.

SMART errors almost always mean you won't get a good copy.
