  • How to replace bad 2nd drive

A couple years a go I upgraded my TiVo TCD24004A by adding a Weaknees 160GB drive in addition to the original 40GB drive. The add-on drive recently went bad but was still under Maxtor warranty so they sent me a refurbished 160GB drive.

Now I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to get it to work in my TiVo. Just physically installing it causes TiVo to hang at the "Powering up..." screen. With the drives connected to my PC and booting using the Weaknees CD they both read as the correct sizes. I know a drive can only be expanded once, but I thought maybe the command would do something necessary to the add-on drive. The command fails with a "Total sectors (79358976) mismatch with volume header (347793408)."

Sounds like the problem is the new add-on drive appears different to the system.

Do I need to backup the original drive, wipe it clean, restore, then expand it with the new add-on drive? Just a guess so far - I'll continue to research this but thought I could save myself some time by posting here. Thanks in advance.

P.S. "Replacing a bad 2nd drive" might be a good option to add to the interactive upgrade instructions.

Ok, it seems I may be out of luck since I didn't back up the TiVo image before sending in the 2nd drive. Since the drive was failing maybe I wouldn't have been able to get a successful backup anyway.

Since I have another TiVo I'm wondering if I can get the image from that one. It is a newer Series 2 and the problem TiVo is an older one.

You've come to the right conclusion regarding the backup issue: without a backup, you can't get running again.

If your other TiVo is a 240 unit, you can use the image from that to reformat these drives. You'll need to do a "clear and delete everything" once you have the drives in the unit to reserialize the image back to this unit.
      Been here a long time . . .

Dang. It seems my newer Series 2 is a TCD540040.
