  • Remote problems after drive upgrade

I just replaced a failed hard drive in my Directv Tivo (model SAT-T60) and now only some of the remote control buttons work. Fast forward, play, reverse all seem fine, but the number pad, volume control and select button don't.

It's hard to use Tivo without a remote

    Any advice?

Problems like that have a common cause in later units, but not in that one. First, if you can't solve the issues, we have replacement faceplates for Sony SAT T-60s. But you should check the internal cable that goes from the faceplate to the motherboard to see if the connection is secure.

I checked the connection and it's fine. The fact that about half of the buttons work makes me think the connection is not the problem, but I did check to make sure. Still no luck. The remote worked up until the point where I had to replace the drive. Any suggestions?

Pretty strange. Have you tried the obvious: new batteries in the remote?

Yes. That was my first idea. No luck with new batteries.

So maybe it's just coincidental? If you go back to the first drive, does the remote work again? You may just have a broken remote . . .

              OK. I'll try it tonight.

Well, it looks like you might be right. The old hard drive does seem to work after all. I can play recordings using the buttons on the display, but as I mentioned several buttons on the remote don't seem to function properly. So how can I tell if the remote is the problem or if the front panel is? I see a red light flash on the remote when I press a desired button, but the receiver certainly doesn't recognize it. Is there a way I can determine for sure which part is defective?

I don't think you can know for sure without replacing each part.

Have you tried clearing the remote? You can do that on a TiVo peanut remote by holding down TiVo and Pause until the red light is on solid, then press zero. I'm not sure if the same works on the Sony TiVo remote.
