  • Laptop - USB to IDE

Hello, I am in the process of upgrading a new dual tuner Tivo. I transitioned a lifetime subscription, and am taking the old weaknees 1 unit hard drive and using it as the slave drive for the new unit. I bought the weaknees twinbreeze and mounted the second drive, but didnt realize I still had to change anything on the old drive. However, its not recognizing the added drive, so I think I do. My questions are:

1 - Do I definitely have to run MFS on the new second slave drive (Former master one drive)

2 - Do I have to run MFS on the factory drive that shipped with the Tivo - one place seemed to indicate I didn't, another said there was a tool to run if the combined drives were over 150 gigs (Which they would be)

3 - I only have a laptop. I bought a usb to ide converter, but saw from previous messages on the board that it wasn't clear if this was supported on the mfs image disks, but I also saw that weaknees seems to include the usb to ide drivers on the "SATA" iso file. Any updates / clarification on using the mfs too with a usb to ide converter?

Thanks, a loyal Tivo and Weaknees customer.

You should read through the steps on this site and see if that clears things up:

      follow up

      Two follow up:

1 - Do you know if the laptop usb to ide will work with the current weaknees image disks?

2 - I don't see an option for "add drive" for the dual tuner models, but in an earlier exchange on these forums, you clearly indicated this was possible (hence why I bought the twinbreeze mounting bracket)

We don't think a USB to IDE converter will be supported with the Linux on our CDs.

You can add a drive - just use the TCD540040 info.
        Been here a long time . . .

Thanks. One last question. When I read the instructions, it implies that I need to run mfs with both the factory Tivo drive and my new "add" drive. However, I believe you ship "add" drives that can be added into a Tivo unit without running any mfs commands on the existing drive, and also will "prep" stan-alone "add" drive. Am I missing something? If I just need to play with the B drive, life would seem to be easier.

So if I just get the add drive set up with MFS and run "mfsadd -r 4 -x /dev/hdX /dev/hdZ", and then add that add drive back into my twinbreeze set up (the "A" drive is working fine right now), will my "add" drive be recognized?

Yes, you can format a drive to "drop-in" next to a factory drive with a different process. However, the mfsadd command above is used to pair two drives together which would both need to be connected to the Linux computer at the time.

We don't provide instructions on upgrade-instructions.com for formatting a "drop-in" drive.
