  • Device names, newer computers

I just upgraded from an 80G drive to 400G using the excellent upgrade instructions. There was a slight hitch that others might want to be aware of.

When installing the drives in a Linux box that's about six months old, booting from the mfstools cd, the devices assigned to primary master and secondary slave were unexpected. Primary master appeared as /dev/hdg and secondary slave as /dev/hdh. This is odd because I just unplugged the existing drive and plugged the 80G into the same cable. As an old Linux hand I was able to use "dmesg | more" to determine the correct devices, but others might not be aware of this.

I suspect this came about because the motherboard is tricked out with something like four SATA connectors and onboard RAID, and those have priority on the lower device names even though nothing is attached to them.

Thanks again to all who assembled and maintain the upgrade software and instructions!
