My series 2 hard drive died, and I was wondering if you can start with a completely blank hard drive, and make it usable for my tivo. I read the instructions, and that is all about upgrading and backing up, but since I am starting from scratch, it there a way to do this?

You unfortunately can't, because you don't have a backup. You can send the drive for it to be loaded, however, see:
