Need old drive in order to upgrade?

I have an old drive that looks to be dead. I'm thinking of buying an upgrade kit.
Am I correct in assuming that the old drive is not needed in order to get the Tivo
operational again?

I want to do a bit of tinkering with the old drive to see if I can get it working,
but I don't want to do so if it's needed for the upgrade.

I'm not interested in preserving the original programming.

Any insight is appreciated.

Right - the OS is on the new drive, so you don't need anything off the old drive.

Been here a long time . . .
