This seems a bit elementary, but I want to upgrade to MRV. I have 5 connections -- 1 old std receiver, 2 tivo r10's, 1 std directv receiver and 1 HR24. One of my r10's is failing and I want to replace it with either another HR24 or an H24. My HR24 is already connected to the internet via my wireless router. Do I need to get a swm multiswitch or can I just get the deca router package if I want to connect my new HR24 or H24 with my existing HR24? Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks.

It's a little confusing in this situation, but the bottom line is that both units would need to be on the same network, and each unit can only be on one network.
So a DECA router package with SWM would do the trick, but would not support the older equipment.
The easiest way to go here would be just to also connect the new receiver/DVR to the same wireless network, presumably with another wireless bridge. That'll technically work, but will present two issues:
1 - DirecTV really wants you to be on SWM + DECA for MRV, so they'll give you a hard time enabling this on your account.
2 - Wireless transfer speeds for video, especially HD video, aren't great.Been here a long time . . .

Hopefully this is the end of my dumb questions. Since my dish is probably fine and I've HD for 4 months or so, it sounds like all I need to do is swap out my current multiwitch for a SWM switch, install a SWM splitter and power inserter and just use my current cables. Does that mean I just have to remove the cable going into SAT2 on all my receivers (even the std ones) and I'm good to go?

Well, yes, that would be right for the HR24, but not for the R10s. The R10s isn't SWM compatible, so it'll need to use the legacy ports on the SWM8, and two of them. That's four legacy ports, plus you have the old standard receiver.
You could do something unorthodox, and that DirecTV doesn't recommend, but that we've never had a problem with: connect your old multiswitch the legacy ports on the SWM8, and just move over the new receivers to the SWM side, and leave the old ones one the older multiswitch.Been here a long time . . .

Now the fun starts. I install the new swm switch, power inserter, etc. and attach the old multiswitch to the legacy ports on the swm switch and go to activate my new receiver. Directv tells me that I cannot get mrv unless all of my receivers are swm capable, meaning my 3 older receivers, 1 of which is a dvr, will not work because they won't work with swm. They think I need 3 new receivers. That doesn't make sense since all of my receivers, new and old, are working fine now. I just don't have mrv between my 2 new receivers. Whose nuts, me or Directv?
