  • Question about equipment needs

Hello, converting an motorized RV to HD with a front TV change, HR23 and a rear TV, and H23. RV is wired with RG6 coax only. Input from outside rear compartment with a dedicated "Sat dish" connector running to the inside front TV area where there is a multi switch with Sat coax input along with other inputs. At this multi switch there are outputs to the front and rear TV's. My customer wants the latest Direct TV dish mounted on a tripod. Is it possible to connect one RG6 from the dish to the pre-wired "Sat dish" connector and then split it inside at near the multi switch with SWM? Is the latest Direct TV dish available from WeaKnees?

Sounds like you'll want a SWM dish, see:

With that dish, you can run a single RG6 coax line to a splitter (where your multiswitch is now, I presume) and just split the lines and send one to the HR23 and one to the H23.

FYI, these dishes are big, and you usually need nonpenetrating mounts with cinderblocks on the bottom. Tripods are not reliable.

      Thanks,
My customer gave me bad info about the receiver model. One is an HR20-100 and the other is an H23.
      Can you explain the mount?
What type splitter will I need?

        HR20-100 doesn't change the answer.

The mount is basically a pole attached to a large flat base. On the base, you have to put large cinderblocks to keep the dish from tipping. There is also a mat that goes under the base. We have them in stock, so if/when you're ready, just email us.

The splitter is a SWM splitter, see:

So...... can I install the SWM in the outside rear compartment of this RV which will be within 10 feet of the dish and have a 120 volt outlet? If so, then will I need to run 3 coaxial cables from the dish to the SWM?
Does the mount your speaking of fold or store so it could be transported in an RV. We are concerned about the size and also the weight of transporting heavy cement blocks.
Can this set up be aligned for HD using the receiver and it's signal meter? My experience is with SD using an old 18" round satellite dish and domed RV satellites which self align.

HD dishes are not "point and shoot" like the old dual-LNBs are.

As for the mount, the pole comes detached from the base, so I presume it can be detached and re-attached, but it is not meant to do that. With a SWM dish, however, you'd only run one coax line into the RV, where you'd have the power supply and splitter.

Perhaps you should talk to other RV shops to see what they have done in this situation? I know there are 5LNB RV dishes that mount on the roof of an RV and automatically find the satellites. It sounds like you (for your client) are looking for a lower cost alternative....and unfortunately, with the lower cost comes a lot of hassle.

Yes, there are roof mount power units that work with a 5 LNB dish. The problem for this application is that the RV is parked on a lot in Florida for winter and his roof mount is obstructed by trees. We are now considering Dish network because portable units I sell will work with Dish HD. Can you tell me if the SWM will work with Dish components?

swm technolgy is for DTV only

many of the hd rv dishes come with a hefty price tag ... some only between 3 to 5 grand

dish hd for the rv is a little less expensive but comes with other problems as well ...esp if you use a 2 revcr setup... but if like you said with the trees ... you may wind up with the same no signal issues...

let me tell you about something i came up with on the mounting issue for external dishes...... i have found that a 1' x 1' x 4" concrete block works very well on supporting many dishes... you will have to use a low to ground mount ...but it will be more stable ... it weighs close to 50 lbs ... but is better than lugging around 100lbs or more of cinder block to hold down the huge other mounts...all you need is a 1' to 1.5' pole mounted to it ...

this can also be set on the roof of a motor home while stationary

Thanks. We have talked about using a "low" mount. Since he will be leaving it at one location for 4 months he should be able to make a solid mount of some sort. With that in mind, it sounds like Direct TV is the better way to go because of SWM. My next questions is: can I still use his multi switch that is located in the front of the RV? The input will come from the dish to the outside rear compartment where Winnebago wired a single RG6 that goes to the front multi switch. I can install the SWM before the multi switch which will allow me to use three "sat" inputs at the multi switch thus enabling the multi switch for distribution of satellite, OTA antenna and DVD to the front, rear, and third outside TV. Will the multi switch allow the satellite signal to work?

You cannot use a multiswitch with a SWM dish.

you need to use the switch ( splitter ) that comes with the swm lnb

there is also a power inserter to power the lnb

Does the DIRECTV SWM 3LNB Dish sold here use the SL3 LNB?

                          We use only DIRECTV-authorized, DIRECTV-branded, DIRECTV-approved dishes.
