  • SWM for condo unit

I live in a condo building with 6 units. There are only two cables running from the dish to an equipment room on the side of the building. From the equipment room there are 2 cables going into each condo (for a total of 12). Previously when we only had a standard definition DirecTV dish, I think the two cables from the satellite were split into 12 inputs into the condo units. We want to get a HD dish (either a 5 LNB or the SWM LNB) to receive the HD channels. Using the existing wiring is it possible to use either a 5 LNB dish with a SWM8 or a SWM LNB dish with splitters so that each condo still gets two satellite inputs. If so, can you explain how it would be done? Thank you for your time.

You can't use a SWM dish because you would only get 8 tuners, no more.

You really would want to get two lines run to the equipment room. If you can't do that, then you'll have to install 2 SWMs at the dish, and you will get a max of 16 tuners. You'd also need some way to split the signal at the dish. We have a splitter that can be used for that, but I can't promise that it would work in your situation.

Just to be clear, the best way to do this is to run 2 more lines to the equipment room.

If we ran 2 more lines to the equipment room, would we then install 2 SWMs in the equipment room? How many tuners can we get then?

If we didn't run 2 more lines, why do the 2 SWMs need to be installed at the dish and not in the equipment room? Would you split the signal before the SWMs or after?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I am a bit naive about these things.

With a SWM dish you said that we would only get 8 tuners. Does that mean we can get 8 HD receivers or 4 HD/DVR receivers?

4 lines must be connected from a dish to a SWM.

With a swm dish you can get a max of 4 DVRs or 8 receivers (or 4 receivers/2 DVRs)...8 tuners max.

Is there a maximum distance between the dish and the SWMs, or the SWMs and power inserter?

Yes, but additional equipment can handle excessive distances (>50ft or so between dish and SWMs). You should be able to have a power inserter 100ft or so from a SWM without a problem.

i think yall got away from the original question ... looking from beginning to end......

2 swms will work....but 2 things you will have then ... first you will have 2 dishes on the roof ... second you will have to deal with power inserters.... so they will have to be in the equip room 'cause you dont want a tenant moving out & taking the power for the swm with him...

anyway ... i think the 2 swm 8 & the e2 expander is what is needed here....
i think this is where this was origally intended to go ....the other thing you will have to watch is DTV coming in & wanting to put in power inserters... you will have to monitor this on all tenants that move in ...

this will give you 16 tuners.... that will give you 5 apts with 3 tuners each...
thats 1 hd dvr & 1 hd each ... also you will have 4 sd tuners

with this combo it should work ....

or if you need more tuners ... you can do the 4 swm 8 & e4 expander for 32 tuners

though i doubt you will have six tenants all wanting DTV.... but it might happen......

WK - Jeff can confirm if i am correct on this.....

i think i did it right

You can have two SWMs on the roof with only one dish...you just need a weather-resistant tap, which we stock.

i think i see where you are going with this ... tell me if im wrong

use the 2 swm 8 & the e2 expander....then use the power inserters to power the 2 swm 8's separately from the equip room....then you just use the existing 2 line runs....

i think too that what you suggested before ... go head & run the other 2 lines to eqip room if possible ... then you can use the swms to there full capacity...16 plus tuners... plus for the sd recvrs (4 lines)
