  • Is SWM8 for me?

I currently have a Slimline dish with 2 HD DVR's. I also have a second, smaller dish that brings in my local channels. When the installer came, he ran all the cables from my roof into my attic and down to my basement. Then, he put the multiswitch in the basement and ran 2 cables to each DVR. However, he did a very sloppy job running the cables on my roof to the attic. There is cable everywhere and it looks very sloppy from the outside. What I would like to do is install a SWM8 at the Dish, then run one cable into my attic and down to my basement. Then I would get a 1 x 2 splitter for the 2 DVR's.

Will this setup work and be fairly easy for me to do myself? Also, my understanding is that I only need 1 cable to each DVR. Since I have 2 run already that means 1 will become obsolete. The cables are not labeled right now, so how will I be able to tell at the DVR which one has signal and which one is dead?

Any other tips/advice that you guys can give me for doing this install?

It does sound like a SWM8 and a 1x2 will work for you.

As far as figuring out which cable to use at each DVR, just try one. If you get no signal, switch to other. Just be sure to tell your DVR to be looking for a SWM signal once you make the change.

So I will have to go through the setup process again after I reconnect everything and reboot the receivers?

Just the satellite setup part - not the area code/zip code, etc. part.
