Hello... I have been trying to upgrade my existing DIRECTV service to HD with an HD DVR, however DIRECTV has been giving me a serious headache.... the installer told me I needed a SWM for my current wiring but apparently, DIRECTV won't supply these to existing customers - makes no sense. I was wondering if anyone out there would know if the SWM-8 would solve my problem?
I have a 3-story townhouse with the existing old dish on the roof. This dish would be replaced with the new 5LNB dish from DIRECTV and have the 4 cables extend down to my ground level patio where I have 3 cables exposed running to my closet where the main home switch is located. This closet is about 25 feet from the outside connection. I have 2 older DIRECTV DVRs that I want to keep (with just 1 feed in each).
So, will this work - put the SWM-8 outside where the 3 existing cables are exposed, hook 2 of the cables to 2 legacy ports to feed the old DVRs and the 3rd cable to the SWM output. Then take the cable from the SWM and plug it into the power supply (which I would put in the closet where the main switch is)... the IRD output would then connect to the existing cable that runs to the location for the HD DVR. The 2 cables from the legacy ports would connect to the existing cables (in the box in the closet) to the older DVRs.
My main concerns are:
1. Would I need any amplifiers to compensate for the distance from my 1st level closet to a 2nd floor location of the new HD DVR? Any amplifiers needed for the legacy boxes (1 is on the third floor)?
2. By using this setup - does quality of HD suffer?
3. How reliable is the SWM-8?
4. When requesting an upgrade from DIRECTV, will the installer install the SWM-8 that I would purchase if it is not indicated on the work order?
Thanks a lot.... I have had 2 missed appointments, 1 installer tell me I need the SWM LNB (that I cannot get through DIRECTV and won't work with my legacy boxes) and a ton of headaches related to this so far.... I just want HD... it shouldn't be this difficult for DIRECTV to hook me up.
