How does the Tivo Dual Tuner work with only one input ???

It has multiple inputs, but it can split the coax and use just that . . .

These units have no SAT inputs. They can do dual inputs from cable, or one from cable (coax) and one from satellite. But not two from satellite.

If you want to record two shows at once from DirecTV, you need a unit from one of these two pages:

            Dual Tuner

I don't understand -- I have a dual tuner receiver. How do I feed both tuners with the one SWM line so that I have dual tuner operation.

No TiVo works with the SWM.

Excuse me -- I'm used to calling a DVR a Tivo. I have the DirecTv HR20 receiver. So, how do I feed the 2 tuner inputs of the HR20 with one SWM input and get the dual tuner capability ??? Do I split the line from the SWM and connect theose lines to the HR20 inouts ???

You just connect one line from the SWM to the HR20. The HR20 will detect the SWM and give you both tuners.

                  Great wiring diagrams are here:

To answer the question simply, The "splitting" of the signal is happening inside the HR20.
SWM (SINGLE wire multiswitch) sends a "stacked" signal. Using a SWM8 in theory, if you had a unit that had 8 tuners and the ability to "destack" built into the reciever, then you still would only need the one line going in.

                    .
