I have a hughes 40 gig dvr and it has worked great for 3 years. Lately it bacan freezing up. when I called Direct TV they told me to Delete everything and start fresh. When i selected the option to clean the disk and delete everything I got a message not to turn off the Hughes DVR while the cleaning was going on and it may take up to an hour to clean the drive. Well it's been 3 days and the the same message is still on the tv screen. I've unpluged the dvr and removed the card and not avail. all i get is cleaning in progress and do not turn power off. any suggestions?

That's pretty clearly a bad hard drive. A replace kit for your model should fix that. Find the exact model here:

would upgrade be best course
When I went on line to view my Direct TV account they indicate I am eligable to upgrade to a DVR withour charge. I already have a digitial turner as one box in family room and I may be better off to get a free upgrade and commit to an additional 24 months instead of repairing my 3 year old hughes 40 gig. any pro or cons on upgrading verses repairing?

If you "upgrade" you'll get a non-TiVo DVR. See the info about the two in our blog:

You essentially have an R10 clone, and they'll likely send you an R15.Been here a long time . . .
