  • HDTV on DirectTV

Anyone know how I can find out if the "local" channels in my area can be recorded in HD by the Series 3 TiVo? I'm in a rural area and the only true local channel that I might be able to get by antenna is not in HD and not offered by DirectTV...ALL of the "local" channels are really from the nearest big city (Phoenix) 140 miles away. How do I find out if they're in MPEG4 format (and therefore can't be recorded by TiVo)?

    Try here first:

If you are within about 30 miles of transmitters, and there are no mountains or buildings in the direct line of sight, you should be OK. If you are further, you might still be able to make it work with a well-aimed antenna. More info is here:

No, my issue is not how to get OTA transmissions...that's NOT going to happen. I live 120-140 miles away from a metropolitan area. I really have only two choices for television...cable or sattelite. Our cable company only has FOUR HD channels available, so we've gone with DirectTV for our HD. I'm hearing such bad things about THEIR HD DVR and I LOVE my TiVos that we use for recording off of cable! Will DirectTV be able to tell me if the format I'm getting for the "local" (I keep putting that in quotes because those stations are 140 miles away!) HD I get from them is in MPEG4 or a format that I can use for an HD TiVo?

Any HD channels in Phoenix through a DirecTV dish will be MPEG4. The only ones in MPEG2 are locals for New York and Los Angeles.
