How to switch to owned HR21

I have a HR21 that I bought from a friend. He thought it was owned but when I called Directv, they said it was a leased reciever. My friend is in good standing with directv and will take the reciever back if it does not work out, but I would like to keep it as a garage receiver. Is there any way to make it an owned receiver? Would he need to do it or could I? Thanks

Not likely. Your friend would have to call DIRECTV and ask them to re-characterize the receiver....but DIRECTV is unlikely to do that unless your friend paid $500+ for it, and even if he did, it's no guarantee at this point, since it was activated long ago.
