  • HR23 Intermittent Freezing & Once Rebooted

I have an upgraded DirecTV HR23 DVR with a 750GB HD.

In just the past week it has been freezing about once or twice a day for about 15-30 seconds and last night it automatically rebooted while recording a program.

I know some software/feature upgrades have been sent to the reciever from DTV in the past couple weeks. Does this have anything to do with it or is the hard drive going bad? (It's been in operation for just over two years.)

Not likely a software issue; more likely a hard drive going bad, I'd say. You might consider an external, see:

      Thanks, Jeff.

      Three things, though.

      1. Does it matter that the freeze ups have happened while watching live TV?

      2. Are the external hard drives strictly "plug-n-play" to override the internal HD?

& 3. The HD on my old standard def TiVo DTV reciever lasted about the same amount of time. Is two years pretty much the life expectancy of a TiVo/DVR hard drive?

        1. All TV is recorded, whether live or not. There should be no difference at all and I'm guessing there really isn't.

        2. Yes.

        3. Not necessarily. You should consider a UPS, see:
