  • Network connection with a HR21

My network is all Apple. Modem DSL and router is an Apple Time Capsule. I have connected my HR21 with an ethernet cable that travels from my Time Capsule to a ethernet switch and then on to my HR21. My PS3 is connected to the same system the same way and works flawlessly. My HR21, connects with my network but not to the internet. I have used the automatic method and have manually connected using my router IP address, submask net numbers etc and the result is always the same. It connects to my network but not the internet code (13) when connected automatically and code (22) when connected manually. DirecTV is of no help at all.

Pretty strange. Have you tried forcing a software update on the HR21?

Do you get a legitimate IP address when you use DHCP?

I don't know how to force a software update.

Currently the log on screen says:
      IP Address OK
      Subnet Mask OK
      Default Gateway OK
      DNS OK
      Network Connected
Internet Not connected to the Internet (22)

I don't see a DNCP option, only try again or Advanced Setup.

I have a standard HR21 with one of your (Weaknees) external one terabyte hard drives

Reboot the HR21. When you see the first gray screen, enter on the remote:

        0 2 4 6 8

That will force it to download and install the latest software.

It was difficult to see the gray screen as my HR 21 connects to my TV through my audio receiver and the screen stays blank until the start up screen shows up. On the second try I simply entered the numbers (02468) as soon as I restarted the receiver and it did, if fact, update my software, to no avail, however. I'm still not getting through to the internet. I then restored the defaults. The IP address in the auto set up 169.254.5.237 is different than the IP address I got off my router for the manual set up 10.0.1.50.

I'll give Apple a call today and see if they have any idea what is going on.

I just talked to Apple and they were of no help.

An IP address in the 169 range is basically a bad address.

For some reason, your Time Capsule doesn't seem to be giving out an IP address to the HR21. Make sure DHCP server is enabled on the Time Capsule, then, if possible, try one cable from the HR21 to the Time Capsule and see if it can acquire a legitimate IP address. It would probably start with a 192 number.
