  • External Drive is no longer recognized

My external hard drive has been working very well until today.

My son moved the PS/3 from the main TV to the TV in his room. I am not sure what cords he may have unplugged but everything is plugged in now.

However, the DVR is now using the original internal hard drive.

My external hard drive is connected and is running so I don't know what to do.

I turned off both the DVR and the hard drive. Then I turned the hard drive on and waited for 3 min. and turned the DVR on. No change. The DVR is still using the internal hard drive

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure you have the external connected to the DVR properly--in the eSATA port?

Thanks for your response. Yes, it was working properly before. He claims that nothing was unplugged or turned off.

I have checked the connection to make sure and it is correct.

I thought that the problem might be that the dvr was turned off and back on and that confused the synch but I have tried turning them both off and then powering up the external hd waiting several minutes and then turning on the dvr but that did not address the problem.

You either have a bad connection, a bad hard drive or possibly could you be running from the external and not realize it?

I will replace the cable. I don't think I am running off of the external. The recorded shows that are listed are from November which was before I installed the hard drive.

FYI, in case someone else has the same issue, it is working now.

I did not force a reboot by turning the power off of the DVR. So, I unplugged it and after the prolonged boot up process my external hard drive was recognized.

Thanks Weaknees. I am glad that you guys are around.

Right--you have to unplug the DVR completely before removing or installing an external.
