  • Receiving Directv through southern window

    This is my first post.
However, I have watched and searched this forum for sometime.
Unfortunately, I have had no luck finding information concerning this situation.

I live in a Pittsburgh, PA area apartment with a dish looking through a southern window (Glass replaced with a Lexan pane) and get about 70 to 85 signal strength with my old RCA DRD430RG satellite receiver and oval single LNB antenna.

    I rarely loose satellite signals.
However, a level 3 thunderstorm will shut me down for about 4 or 5 minutes.
Local Directv provided channels are never lost.

I use one RCA receiver feeding 4 TVs via splitters through my apartment RG-59 coax wiring.

I use the X-10 Pyramid RF/IR wireless for changing channels since the satellite receiver is located in the spare bedroom thus all TV's show the same channel.
I live alone and that is fine with me. In fact, it is desirable.

I am thinking about upgrading to HD from (Directv) my current provider.

    Questions:
    1) Will the lower signal strength be a significant problem for a HD system?
    2) How will RG-59 coax work over 20 to 60 foot runs if I use 4 HD satellite receivers in different rooms connected to the HD satellite antenna.

I thank you in advanced for any replies.

You should really use RG6 cable for the best signal, but those runs aren't too long, so RG59 should be OK.

70 to 85% strength really isn't too bad. My guess is you'll be fine.
    Been here a long time . . .
