Really basic question

I found a TCD 540080 Series 2 Tivo at the local Goodwill store ($50) but I'm not into any monthly fees.

1 - Can I use it as a dumb PVR (time/channel programming, like a VCR)?

2 - If no are there hacks to achieve this goal? (I'm technically proficient and 'nix capable.)

1a) The Series2 will need to be subscribed in order to work in any way...maybe it has lifetime service?

2a) no hacks exist to circumvent tivo service

I've read that there are eproms inside. Are these "hackable" to allow standalone operation? I *do* have the capability to diddle those.

I would imagine the TiVo service number resides on an eprom, but that's as far I as I can carry the ball on that one.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll keep the $ in my pocket and put it toward the mythTV I'm planning to build.
