  • Do I need more memory after two drives?

I recently upgraded my series 1 philips 312 to two 160 gig drives. I note that the image quality does not seem to be as sharp or as good, even on "live" TV watching (going through the Tivo hard disks, of course anyway)
Why is this? Do I need to add more memory or something? Is too much of the Tivo memory being used to manage and catalog the increased disk space? (I assume that the Weaknees hard drives are top quality...)

The picture quality should, in no way, be related to the size, quantity or quality of drives inside your unit. A malfunctioning drive could cause the image to pixellate or break up, but it would not affect its "sharpness" so to speak.

It's possible that the TiVo is recording at a lower resolution as a default, or something may have happened either to the tuner or the inbound video signal.
That's all there is to it!

      Problem not quality setting

I agree with you. However, I'm still suspicious that the image quality is decreased. Now there is no choice of image quality on live viewing--it it presumably on best. Nothing happened exccpt you guys taking out one old disk and putting in two new ones. Is it possible that adding more memory to the unit might improve image quality? What does the internal memory do? Does it have to do any image processing or something? Should I add some more RAM???
      Anybody have any other thoughts??

          more RAM

Yes, it's possible to add more RAM to a Tivo. It's a computer in there. The question is, just what would that do. Some say it would make the menus faster, the now playing, etc. But does it do something else too? If you add a lot more storage, surely there is more book-keeping and cataloging tasks, etc. And is there ANY image processing or something that the RAM does? Something must translate the digital signals to the hard disk and back again.....

We really don't recommend adding RAM. It would have to be soldered to the motherboard, and more often than not, people cause more damage during the process, for very little (if any) benefit.
            Been here a long time . . .
