As the title indicates, I have two DirecTivo units (LR and BR). Last night while watching a live show on the LR unit, it jus died (no lights, no signal, very faint clicking noise near the fan). To get back up to finish the show, I swapped it with the BR unit. That worked fine so this morning, I thought I would swap hard drives in the two units (since the LR drive is the most important). I did that but when I powered up the BR unit (with the LR drive), it died with the same symptoms (no lights, no booting, just the fan). I swapped things back but to no avail; now both units are dead.
Reviewing online troubleshooting from this and other forums, it sounds like a power supply failure in both units. I tried to be very careful about waiting for the PS to discharge before swapping drives and not touching the PS while doing the swap. Is it possible that a bad hard drive crash could kill the power supply? I haven't tried putting the LR drive in my PC and running diagnostics.
