  • New hard drive from WeaKnees did not help

I have a TIVO Series 2 TCD230040. About a week ago the Tivo began displaying the gray "Welcome. Powering up..." screen. After powering up there was no change and the hard drive was making unusual "clunking noises." So, I assumed the hard drive had crashed and burned and need replacing.

I went to the WeaKnees website, which I found on Google, and purchased a replacement drive. The instructions were easy to follow and I installed to new hard drive -- no problem. I made sure all the connections were firm and everything was in place.

However, there is no change in the TIVO. The gray "Welcome. Powering up..." screen remains stuck where it is. The new hard drive doesn't make the racket the old hard drive made, but that is the only difference. Should I just return the hard drive WeaKnees sent me? I have lifetime service on this unit and I don't want to lose that. What should I do?

Have you checked that the IDE cable is firmly plugged in on both ends and that there are no bent pins? Have you checked the power connector?

I reopened the case, checked all the connections, unplugged them and plugged them back in again, just in case, and made sure they were all nice and snug. No difference, the screen in still stuck on "Welcome. Powering up..." No bent pins, the IDE cable is firmly connected on both ends. The power connector in firmly connected. I don't know what else to check for.

The upgrade instructions that came with the drive say: Instructions for ONE DRIVE REPLACEMENT for Series 2 DirecTV DVR, TCD2X and TCD5X TiVo-branded Series TiVos. Looks right to me. Could this also be a power supply problem?

It is possible. You can send the drive back for testing, or you can try a power supply. Just send us an email and we can get you taken care of, although it the new drive didn't solve the problem, it may not be a drive issue.

              Good news.

I sent the replacement drive back for testing and it was returned having been fully tested by WeaKnees. This time I reinstalled the drive and, as a precaution, also replaced the IDE cable (gray ribbon connector) with one I had left over from the installation of a hard drive on my desktop computer. This time the hard drive booted up nicely and I have my Tivo back! It could have been that both the hard drive and the IDE cable were shot. I don't know. All I know is that it is working again.

              Thank you WeaKnees!
