    Display "welcome powering up"

    Mid last year 2016; I fitted a new power supply and hard drive, it would reboot now and again over the past few months and now the screen just displays WELCOME POWERING UP.

    The power supply seems okay; +5 and +12 volts as per normal.

    Would I be able to hook up the HD to a LINUX PC and check for errors? I don't know which version of LINUX is being used in my TIVO series 2.

    You can use the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tools, available online, to test the drive. Just download a version that is self-booting that doesn't rely on Windows.

      Do I just plug the WD 10EZEX HD into my windows 7/64 PC and run the diagnostics? Not done this type of repair before; so your guidance is most appreciated.

          Sounds like it's probably right. We have other tools we use here, but that sounds like the right consumer tool.

              Lucky I have a HD docking unit makes life a lot easier.

                Ran the test and the HD had bad sectors. Ran the repair tool and re-installed in the Tivo; BINGO!

                  Great! Glad to hear it's working.

                  In our experience, once you have some bad sectors, the drive will continue to fail in other areas, so best bet is to replace it entirely.

                    This is what I suspected; yes it is playing up under test; it is a new HD, so I will check if it is still under warranty.

                      Can a series two accomodate a 2tb HD?

                        Nope. 1 TB max per drive in a Series2.

                          I tried to do the S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive tests, no luck; I tried it on my Tivo and it booted up into the smart test screen and is running the test okay.
                          So I am thinking the family room Tivo has had it's day; it was a refurbished unit.
