  • Just arrived: 160GB Upgrade drive DOA?

I have the Tivo Series 2 TCD540080 lifetime subscription! Everything was perfect until recently some of the recorded shows were distorted and I could hear clicking sounds from the HDD. I haven't tested the drive yet but assume the recent loud clicking would mean HDD failure.

I ordered the 160GB upgrade kit to replace my original 80GB HDD. Just arrived today! Order #936148.
Opened package, swapped hard drives and powered up Tivo. It gets to the "Welcome! Powering up..." screen and at 50 seconds, reboot loops.

I listened closely each time and can hear the drive spin up then goes silent when the "Welcome" appears. Nothing afterwards until the Tivo reboots.

Just to make sure it's isolated to the replacement drive and not my unit:
I put my original drive back in. I hear it spin up, goes silent for the Welcome screen. I hear drive activity at the 20second and 140second mark, where at the 150second mark it advances to the "Almost there. Just a few minutes more." screen and then starts up normally.

So then I put your replacement 160GB back in. Same as the first time. Constantly reboots at the 50 second mark and no activity noise coming from the drive. This is a single drive unit and i checked to make sure both drives have the pin on CS position.

Think I ordered a dead drive or it was not properly formatted for the Tivo. I found articles for buying a new AV drive and then formatting it with InstantCake software myself, however I chose to use weaKnees because you were mentioned on the forum to sell preconditioned drives for use in the Tivo. If the drive is good maybe the format is bad or incorrect. Should be the TiVo TCD540080 InstantCake.

When I find my IDE/USB adapter I'll be able to test both of the drives. Also have an old desktop somewhere with IDE/SATA that could do the HDD test in BIOS.

You ordered for TiVo model TCD24004A. But you have a TCD540080. The drive we shipped was formatted for the model for which you ordered, which is apparently not the model you have.
    Been here a long time . . .
