  • TiVo HD with extender...recording stutters, reboots

    I'm having a problem similar to http://www.wkforums.com/forums/showt...booting-issues

I have a TiVo HD and WD extender, both with original drives (I believe 160GB and 500GB, respectively; so amazed they've gone this long without problems). CableCard in TiVo for two tuners from cable. Live TV seems to work fine, but if I rewind back from live or watch a recording, I get frequent freezes of the video, enough that it may cause a discrepancy from the time bar, but worse it'll gray screen both tuners' buffers at the time when the worse stutter happened. If something is being recorded during this, I need to stop the recording and start a new one. There are fairly frequent reboots...some spontaneous and some from really bad video freezes. I had an "extender not found" error last week, but I unplugged and reseated all cables, then powered both down for a bit, which seemed to get it to boot again.

I'm not working full time, otherwise I'd probably buy a new TiVo (or send the unit to WK for repair/upgrade), but the unit otherwise still works well and has Lifetime on it, so I'd like to run it until it dies or becomes irreparable. I'd also like to try fixing it myself. My thinking is to put the max sized HD into the main unit, and scrap the extender.

--Is this easy enough to do myself? I have experience putting computers together (I did an HD replacement in my laptop not long ago; managed to get the data copied to a new drive while I was at the early stages of "the click of death"), so I'm pretty tech savvy.

--What's the biggest drive I can put into the unit...2TB, like the one you have listed on the upgrade page? (If yes, I'd love to buy one from you, but I'll probably go with Amazon, because I have gift-card credit on account there and it's cheaper.)

--Is it possible to combine the data from both the TiVo and extender on the one drive using something like Macrium Reflect (I have that already from that laptop-HD copy/swap I did earlier in the year)? Is there a WK page to address this change or can you point me to one elsewhere?

I'd appreciate whatever advice you can provide. Thanks in advance...

Yes, it sounds like you need a new drive, and possibly also a power supply. See this info about a power supply:

    http://www.weaknees.com/bps

The biggest drive is 2TB. But formatting a drive like that is not easy - and a drive you buy from Amazon will not be formatted. That's a big reason why people buy our kits (or course, they also include the tools you need, installation instructions, and support).

We can combine your data as part of our Deluxe Upgrade Service, but only if both drives are currently working perfectly, and it sounds like they aren't.
    Been here a long time . . .
