So, my TiVo HD was rebooting at random times, more and more frequently. I figured the most likely culprit was the hard disk so I ordered a replacement from weaKnees, it arrived, and I installed it. Everything seemed to work okay, although it would still reboot, so maybe it wasn't the disk that's a problem. In any case, it was mostly working.
Then, after it seemed to work fine for a while, I've got new problems. All of a sudden, I stopped being able to delete recordings. I push the delete button, the grey X appears next to the program, but it never goes away. After leaving the menu and coming back, the program shows up without the X. At this point I can't delete anything. Second problem, none of the programs will play. I select one, I hit the play button, and the TiVo reports that "The TiVo HD DVR was not able to record this program because there was no video signal on the channel. ..." I know the reception is good, and watching live TV works just as you'd expect. I can scan backwards through live programs, so I figure something is being saved to disk. What the hell is going on?
I've tried rebooting. I've tried unplugging and rebooting. I've tried kickstart code 58 (Although one can never be 100% sure this actually happens, but I did get the service update screen afterwards. Whoever designed the interaction with TiVo's diagnostic and repair system should be beaten severely.) I could replace the old disk drive, but that's all I can think of to do at this point.
Is it likely there's a problem with the new drive that did not manifest itself initially? Is there anything I can do about that? My expectation is that the TiVo itself is just effed, and it's time to just pitch it and consider the money spent on the replacement drive as wasted. Given the TiVo's age and the fact that I don't really like the box itself very much, it doesn't seem worthwhile to do another expensive repair to it. Do I have any other options?
