I have an 11 year old Series 2 DIRECTV DVR (SD) RCA DVR80. This evening it got into a boot loop: I get the "welcome. powering up..." screen for several minutes, then the "almost there. just a few minutes more..." screen for several minutes, then a brief flash of the "press directv" screen it usually shows when entering standby (which is the mode I leave it in when I'm not using it) and then back to "welcome" again. It's possible (although I'm not completely sure) that it has recently been showing some minor vertical striping in the video image (by which I mean horizontal variations in brightness). On the "welcome" screen, I'm definitely seeing a diagonal herringbone pattern.
The hard drive and power supply were replaced about a year ago. It is connected to a UPS. As far as I know there haven't been any power failures, lightning strikes, etc.
I swapped the hard drive out for its predecessor, which is 9 years old (8 years use followed by 1 year storage). Now it seems to be working (I still see the herringbone).
So either my relatively new hard drive went bad, or has some bad interaction with some other failing component; or just the process of opening the system up and swapping drives kicked it into working again. (I guess I could swap the drives back and see what happens.)
I looked at http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-kickstart-codes.php. Do any of those codes apply to a DIRECTV TiVo? If so, perhaps I can put the new drive back and run diagnostics on it.
I looked at http://www.weaknees.com/repair.php and http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-powering-up.php. Is the cycling I'm seeing (3 screens) the same as the cycling described in the latter URL (2 screens)?
Thanks.
