I recently picked up a TIVO series 2 supposedly with lifetime service but it is stuck at the welcome screen. My question is since the service is actually embedded on board and not the drive, Will or should the TIVo boot up with the hard drive unplugged from the board? There is a capacitor on the power board with a slight bulge. If the power supply is bad or flaky will it still try to boot up? Please reply soon.

The service is part of the motherboard. A replacement drive should fix your TiVo and keep it working with your lifetime service.

Please note that if your Series2 TiVo starts with 240, then you may also have a failing power supply. See this page for replacements:
