  • Can the S3 use multi-channel CableCARDs as single-channel CableCARDs?

My S3 recently started the WPU reboot loop. Following instructions on this site, I determined that the problem was CableCARD 2 - when it's inserted in either slot, the problem occurs.

Had Verizon come out, supposedly with a new single-channel CableCARD, to replace the defective one. But they showed up with a multi-channel CableCARD...said they were unable to locate a single-channel CableCARD in their inventory.

The S3 recognized the multi-channel CableCARD as a single-channel CableCARD and proceeded through guided setup. It's working fine as a single-channel card. The tech did not install the working single-channel CableCARD into slot 2, so I don't know if they can co-exist.

I used Verizon's online chat and requested that they send me a pair of single-channel CableCARDs. The package arrived, and right on the front it says "M Card". So I believe I received two multi-channel CableCARDs.

Does anyone know whether I can use these "M Cards" in single-channel mode to take the place of single-channel CableCARDs?

    Thanks for any replies.

M cards work as S cards where needed. Is your Series3 a TCD648250B? If so, then two M cards are fine - one channel will come in over each.

Next, the problem is probably actually your TiVo's power supply. See this page for more info, but CableCARD problems like this are usually bursting capacitors on the TCD648250B model TiVos:

It appears you are correct. A couple of days after the Verizon tech got the box working with one M CableCARD, the TiVo starting doing the "Welcome. Warming up" loop again. So I ordered a replacement power supply and today installed it. Powered up properly and I was able to activate it with two M CableCARDs installed.
