  • Unwanted channel change just after ToDo item started

My Series 2 TIVO has worked great for years. This new problem just started a couple of weeks ago. No hardware changes were made.

TIVO drives Comcast std definition cable box - old Motorola hardware - by way of serial port. TIVO uses phone line, not internet.

Upon executing the next ToDo List item (change to correct channel, begin recording) my cable box channel then changes to one number lower. So, TIVO thinks it's recording on channel 13 (Info shows that), for instance, but the cable box shows channel 12 (and that's what channel it is on), so the wrong program gets recorded. Seems like it's happening 50-75% of the time (not every time, but OFTEN).

I have two identical cable boxes, and swapping in the other box, it behaves exactly the same. To me, that says that the TIVO is sending the errant code immediately after it sent the correct code. Yet, it thinks it's on the correct channel.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,
    Greg

Interference on the serial cable? Have you shut it all down, unplugged the serial cable, plugged it all in again? Bad cable?

The cable works as expected to (automatically) change to the correct channel in the first place, when beginning to record a program from the ToDo list. And, manually changing the channel either explicitly, by number, or by the up/down channel button on the TIVO remote always works fine. I disconnected and reconnected the cable when I swapped out the cable box, and it still works fine. Its physical routing has not been disturbed, nor has any equipment's position been moved.

The channel does not spontaneously change mid-program or any other time except immediately after starting the ToDo item. Yes, everything has been rebooted since this problem began a few weeks ago (after working perfectly for many years).

OK - I don't really have any other guesses. I can't say I've heard of this before. And it's definitely strange that it only happens on the unattended channel changes.

          More information--
The unwanted channel change also occurs when TIVO records a Suggestion. And, because of the way TIVO behaves (it starts recording before it changes the channel), the saved program shows the events that took place. Change to the new (correct) channel, about a one second delay, and then the change to the adjacent (lower number) channel. As this is happening on more than half of the recorded programs, it makes TIVO scheduling (unattended recording) essentially useless. WTF?? This is a deal-breaker malfunction.

          Any help would be appreciated.

You could certainly try redoing Guided Setup and you could see if you find a better code for your cable box.

More information on the behavior of this TIVO malfunction--
When you STOP the recording (which is happening on the wrong channel), the TIVO box then sends a command to the cable box which puts it BACK ON THE CORRECT channel.

Now, I realize that the Series 2 box is an older product, and development for it has likely long-ago ceased. But, there have to be a lot of these still in service, AND WE ARE PAYING A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEE FOR IT TO CONTINUE TO PROPERLY FUNCTION. What do you suppose it's going to take to get TIVO to correct this problem (which probably came down the phone line as some kind of update)?

After working fine for years, this only began to malfunction at the end of July, or beginning of August, 2015.

I want to see this though to actual resolution, and, unfortunately, re-doing Guided Setup is not it.

I really don't have a good answer for you. I think you'll have to contact TiVo to push them to fix this problem.
