  • Helo with eye strain isue caused by Tivo Roamio

Cross posted to a few other forums with not a lot of luck, figured I'd try the experts here. Wondering if anyone can solve this mystery.

Setup: Panasonic TC-L55ET5 LED TV, Tivo HD, HDMI Connection

My trusty Tivo HD was finally rebooting enough for me to upgrade to a Roamio. So I ordered it and a Mini for my second TV. I plug the Roamio in, and after watching it, start getting eye strain headaches, the muscles around my eyes feel tired and sore. I had none of these symptoms using the Tivo HD.

I am using the same television, the exact same video settings on the TV, same cable card, even the same HDMI cable, the only difference is the Tivo unit. It is much worse when streaming content, not as bad when watching live TV or the Tivo menu's, but still noticeable. I tried attached the Mini to the TV and didn't see much of a difference.

This is not unprecedented for me, I have another Tivo HD hooked up to a Panasonic Plasma, that causes me no eye strain issues, I tried a Roku stick on that TV and got the same eye strain issues when I watched anything on the Roku stick. Apparently the TV's have the ability to generate something that bothers me, but only certain hardware actually causes it to do so.

This occasionally happened with some content on the Tivo HD, Amazon On Demand HD content would trigger me, but SD content would not. YouTube videos on the Tivo HD did not trigger me, Youtube videos on the Roamio do. YouTube videos on the TV itself (It's a Smart TV that has the exact same YouTube app that the Roamio has) do not trigger me, I even tried the same video on both devices, TV fine, Roamio triggered me.

Many cell phone screen cause the same eye strain issue, some screen protectors (notably Skinomi and TechArmor) completely solve the problem when applied. This leads me to believe it is something to do with what the display is emitting and not a refresh rate thing, although that is just a hunch.

I tried messing with video settings on the TV, no real difference, I couldn't find any video settings on the Roamio that I could use to change the display. One question I have, does anyone know the model numbers/specs for the exact hardware that is driving the video-out on the Tivo HD and Tivo Roamio? Looking up the specs on those two pieces of hardware may shed some light on this.

It's mostly academic since I ordered a replacement drive for the Tivo HD from Weaknees that is on it's way and I am going to return the Roamio and Mini, but it is quite the (painful) mystery, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

You indicate that the problems are worst when you stream content on the Roamio. Were you using the same streaming services on the TiVoHD? The TiVoHD does not stream the same breadth of services as the Roamio, for example.

      Some comparisons
      • On the TiVo HD, the only video I streamed was from Youtube. It is the old TiVo youtube interface. No issues.
      • On my Smart TV, I watch YouTube videos on the YouTube app on the TV, which is the same app on the roamio. No issues
      • On the Roamio, I watched a YouTube video on the YouTube app on the Roamio, and got eye strain

      • On the TiVo HD, I had watched Amazon content download from the Amazon store. HD content triggered me, SD content did not
      • On the Smart TV, I watched Amazon Prime Instant Video, using the Amazon app, which is the same app as the Roamio. No issue
      • On the Roamio, I watched Amazon Prime Instant Video, and was triggered

The same video was watched in each scenario across devices. The only difference I can tell is what is driving the video display

Does anyone know the video card used in the HD and the Roamio?
