I have a Series 2 DIRECTV DVR (SD) RCA DVR80. Two days ago I had a power failure. (The DVR is plugged into a UPS, but the power failure lasted too long, and the UPS battery ran down.) Since then, when I power up the DVR, it gets as far as the "Almost there. Just a few minutes more..." screen, and then after a few minutes I get an orange-and-black "The internal temperature was too high. The DVR has been shut down to avoid damage to the hardware." screen. I tried vacuuming the shelf it rests on and the exterior of the case with a full-size vacuum cleaner. I then opened it up and used the same vacuum cleaner on the interior (without touching anything). It didn't help.

The fan is definitely running -- I can see it and feel the airflow. I noticed two things, but I don't know whether they're normal: I can hear a high-pitched sound (not very loud) while it is powering up; and I can smell something sweet (almost dessert-like). Does anyone know if this signifies anything?

http://www.weaknees.com/repair.php ("TiVo IS OVERHEATING") seems to suggest this is a power supply problem. Is there anything else I can try -- either diagnosis or possible remedy? Would a bad power supply look any different?

The hard drive is about 8 years old. The DVR itself is about 10 years old.
