  • Elite XL4 Random Reboots

My 2+ year old Elite XL4 2TB Unit seems to be having a increasing occurance of reboots. I can't pick up a particular pattern although several times I have noticed that while viewing a recorded show the video will freeze and I notice the yellow panel light briefly illuminate before re-boot. It now also seems to reboot several times in succession as well. My initial thought is a failing hard drive although I am weighing the relative benefit of opening the case and voiding the warranty which is in force until November ultimately though I'm more interested in preserving the recording on the drive if possible. Any troubleshooting ideas that might help would be appreciated. thanks.

That does sound like a drive. Try the "overnight" test in the kickstart menu:

Assuming it is a failing hard drive should I be able to simply dupe the old drive to a fresh one using my standalone duplicator dock ?

Nope - you'll likely copy corrupt data. I guess there's no harm in trying, but I doubt you'll get a stable unit.

We have replacement drive kits here:

Having a similar problem on my Elite XL 4 tuner. Intermittent reboots. Believe my hard drive is failing. Works OK for a few days, and then reboots. Think it is stable enough to get a good copy.

Is there a way that I can save my recorded shows? Or do I need to send the TiVo in? Or should I buy a new drive and lose all my stored programs.

We really don't recommend trying to save the data from a failing drive - it just leaves open the possibility of copying over corrupt OS info.

I'd recommend one of our self-install kits.
