  • Tivo Series 3 Sound Skipping

At first I experienced this sound skipping about every 3-5 seconds on one channel. I checked other channels including those on a second Tivo box and all was well.

Researching this issue all points to a bad HDD. So I ran the HDD diagnostics and all but the Overnight Test passed. I am going to run the overnight test tonight.

I have also tried to force a Tivo OS update but the system failed giving me an error that it could not connect to the servers.

This is a modded system purchased from WK with a Tivo Lifetime subscription. If I were to submit this for replacement HDD could all the recordings be transferred to the new HDD? Or if I were to add an external HDD could the programs be transferred in order to replace the HDD?

I'd try the overnight test and see what you get.

In general, failing drives can't be copied well.
    Been here a long time . . .

So I ran all the S.M.A.R.T tests and it took about 2 1/2 hours. All Passed!!! I next ran the Overnight Test and there were NO errors. Sound skipping has seemed to have gotten a little bit better but it still skips. I also ran Kickstart 52 and 58. During the random read/write test I noticed that a few additional icons showed up besides the green dots. There were three red upside down triangles and about 10 yellow diamonds. Are the yellow diamonds bad sectors? Could not find any info on these color shapes. Seems everyone on the Internetz is asking teh same question but not finding the answers.

If the skipping is on specific stations and the hard drive is fine, then there might be an issue on your cable provider's end and/or with the TiVo software (we saw similar issues with Fox channels awhile ago, which TiVo fixed with a software update). You might want to give TiVo a call and see if they have had others reporting similar issues in your area and/or with specific channels.
