About 5 years ago, the SD-H400 Media Server Series 2 I bought in 2003 began to experience boot up issues. Over the years, a bad hard drive was suggested as the possible culprit by a few different sources. I primarily used it for its Basic Tivo functionality (recording/playback of individual/series programs, pausing live TV, etc.) but was too lazy to ever get it fixed. Now I'm paying $150/month for internet access and the privilege of surfing through over 1000 channels and finding nothing to watch. In a year Verizon will begin charging $15/month to rent their DVR which I use pretty much the same way as I did the SDH400. The only difference being VOD programming which I don't remember if it was even available back then. My question: Does it make sense spending the money upgrading/replacing the hard drives of such an old system? Will it even work with todays technology (720p/1080p/K, HD, VOD, Fios, etc.) or am I just throwing money away? Since TIVO Basic was included with it's purchase, I never paid for it's usage. Now, If I go through with the hardware & software upgrade, will I be forced into paying for a subscription service or will it still be available for free. There are too many unknown variables. Please help me decide. Thanks...........

This unit isn't compatible with anything HD, so it'll be hard to use it with the programming you are describing. And you'd still need a cable box for it.
If you do try a drive and get it working, though, your free service will still be free.
