  • Can't seem to enter Tivo HD kickstart

Our Tivo HD has been sporatically restarting quite a bit lately - about once a day, but sometimes only twice a week or so. It's super annoying, because it always seems to happen right when we need to use it of course. And it takes quite a bit of time to restart, around ~10-15mins?

Anyway, I wanted to run through some of the kickstart codes to check the hard drive. But no matter what I've tried, I just can't initiate it. I unplug it, walked away and came back 5mins later. With remote in hand, I plug it in. All lights flash VERY briefly, then right away the green light flashes once. A couple seconds later, the "Starting up..." screen appears. I tried pressing and holding pause at various times here but no luck. I also tried just holding down pause as I plug it in, but nothing happens.

I've tried staring at the green light to see if it flashes later on, but since it takes up to 15mins to finish rebooting I might be missing it when I dare to blink :P. Can anyone give any tips on how to catch this thing? How soon after plugging in the power should I expect the green light to flash?

For grins I cracked it open to inspect the capacitors, as I read they can corrode and cause restarts. It looks brand new inside, nothing out of place. I blew out any dust for good measure before closing it back up.

    Thanks!

You really need to follow the instructions exactly, to the letter, for your model, found here:

    www.weaknees.com/tivo-kickstart-codes.php

Note that you if your unit never gets beyond the "Welcome, Powering up" screen, then in most cases KS codes don't work.

Thanks for the response - yes I've followed the instructions to the letter, aside from the fact I'm unclear if the short green light blink right after plugging in the Tivo is the one I should be looking for as I don't seem to see one later on.

No--the light turns green at first and stays green. Then, once it blinks, you start the kickstart procedure.

I also have a series 3. I have been following the guide to enter kickstart to the letter and I cannot enter it. I'm concerned I have a greater problem. My Tivo has been stuttering for the last few days, select recording are stating that the network is not available (I don't recall the exact message as it goes away and the system ends up rebooting shortly there after), and over the last few hours it has been restarting on its own.

I bought a replacement hard drive through weaknees about 2 years or less ago.

          Any suggestions?

That really does sound like a bad drive. Did you get the extended warranty? Can you try the old drive in the system?

I don't know if I bought the extended warranty, I need to somehow check. I'll look for my old drive. I believe I might have thrown it out, because I believe it was a glorified paper weight.

I want to test and see if its a drive issue. I have two Tivo of the same series, Series 3 HD. If I took the drive out of one, and into the other to test it, would that work? And would that cause me to lose the content on either HDD?

If the models are identical, you can move the drive, but only to test to see if it boots. You won't be able to play content, but the content won't be deleted, either.

Similar question for an old Sony SAT-T60. When I hold Pause at the right time, I get the "two yellow lights", which makes me think that it is ready to enter the kickstart codes. Yes? But I hit the codes and nothing happens. The right yellow light blinks with each keypress, but the box never reboots, and after the normal 10 seconds, it continues its normal satellite load. I am missing something?

Sony units have a bunch of differences, especially surrounding the remotes, but I think this should still work. Try it a few more times.

I was having trouble, too, trying to get my TIVO HD to enter the Kickstart mode. I tried 10 times, without success, before finding the key: patience. The instructions say to press the pause button for a few moments before the red and yellow lights come on. Turns out in my case a "few moments" was 90 seconds or so. Finally the red and yellow lights came on and I pressed Kickstart code 54 for the hard drive test. Again, I thought I failed because the TIVO just kept going with powering up. Again, the key was patience. I was about ready to give up when up pops the hard drive test screen. Success! My advice: this takes longer than you think it should.

On my Premiere XL the key was to wait until the the yellow light blinks, hit the pause key, then the KS code. If successful, the green and yellow lights flash alternately. If that still doesn't get the KS code to work, it's possible the file system or OS on the disk is trashed.
