After retiring my old Sony SVR-3000 (with a WeaKnees upgraded drive!) space became a premium on our TiVo HD. Losing all the programming isn't convenient at the moment so I opted to buy an external WD drive rather than do an upgrade on this unit also.
The first purchase was from TiVo Direct. That didn't work out (details below) and TiVo said to have the drive replaced under warranty by WD. Long story short, WD would not honor the warranty so I returned the drive and purchased another from BestBuy to try again.
That has not gone well either. In both cases after attaching the drive the TiVo rebooted ok and allowed me to choose to marry the drives and reboot. But that reboot eventually goes to the green screen for a couple minutes and then the unit reboots again and it just continues that cycle over and over again until you remove power.
Disconnecting the drive causes the TiVo to ask to un-marry the drive as expected and that works fine.
I can kickstart the unit to the SMART drive tests in standalone mode just fine but with the external drive attached that seems to fail. I can get the unit to turn on all three lights and send the 54 command but the unit then reboots again and never gets to the test menu.
I am starting to suspect that the eSATA port on the back of the TiVo is bad since two separate drives, different cables, etc. have failed in the same way. Does that seem possible?
Thanks.
