  • New HD & PS (Weaknees) still reboots

My R10 Series 2 has been randomly rebooting daily now for a while. This morning I replaced both the HD and the power supply, which I had previously acquired from Weaknees (purchased Jan. 2011). All went well with the hardware installation, the initial startup, and the reactivation call.

About 30 minutes after all that, and while watching live TV, it blinked off and rebooted, just like it's been doing before the hardware replacement. The drive is an exact replacement of the original. I performed the calling and downloading/installing procedure before the failure (reboot).

By all accounts, it is still a drive problem. But is it possible there is something going on with the dish? It is a round Winegard crank-up dish on the top of my motorhome.

I do not have a UPS installed, and am going to town now for one of those. The power is coming from the State Park's pedestal, next to the maintenance yard where I am parked this month, but I've not been able to detect any irregularities there. (I'm a full-time volunteer parks host with Oregon Parks & Rec. Dept.)

I would have no problem purchasing another drive (perhaps a better or bigger one) for this receiver. But throwing hard drives at an unknown problem (kinda like I did this morning) doesn't seem very sensible.

What else should I take into consideration and pursue? Thanks!!

    Brian - Oregon Coast

[ Edit - 1:15 pm ] UPS unit has been added... although the receiver had been plugged into a surge suppressor plug unit. We'll see.

How long has the rebooting been going on?

      Jeff,

I first noticed it starting to happen a lot during heavy rain periods (here in the Pacific Northwest - Oregon coast) earlier this spring. The picture would freeze or it would just blank out and reboot. Over the many years I've had this setup, that behavior has never happened. I would get pixelation and temporary signal loss occasionally with big weather, but never reboots. The daily (three or more times yesterday with the new drive and power supply in) rebooting has been going on for more than a week, and is definitely not atmospheric-condition related.

I also have another dish which I put up on a small tripod, for those times that I park behind a tree and the roof unit is unusable, and the problem seems to exist when using either dish. Although I haven't switched to the remote dish setup since this most recent reboot issue. I'll have to try that and see if things change any.

Overnight, after having set the banner to the thinner line across the top and the short repeat function back a few clicks, I'm sure it has rebooted, as those things had been reset.

      Thanks for the response. Brian

I'm not sure the problem you're having now is related to the problem you had when the weather was bad. Have you been having reboots consistently since that time?

I've been having frequent non-weather related reboots for only the last week or so.

The relationship (to me) of the freezing/rebooting months ago (bad weather) to the frequent reboots now is that there's a similar fault/effect and the fact that none of that EVER happened previously for several years. I've had that unit going continuously since at least 2005.

I have setup the other dish on the tripod, and will monitor the situation.

While having to re-do F-connector ends on one end of the twinax (dish end), I noticed that a considerable length of one of the leads has had water intrusion, causing a lot of corrosion to the braid. I have always suspected water in the coax and connectors as a possible troublemaker. I'm a ham radio operator (50 years now) and am well aware of coax and cabling matters.

The motorhome's roof-top dish shouldn't be having that kind of an issue, with no connectors outside of the LNB housing.

And.... I have another 2 questions.

            1. Can I return the old drive to the receiver without having to call back to DTV for reactivation?... such as I had to do when I installed the new drive.

            2. I noticed the backup battery on the motherboard. It occurs to me that perhaps the battery should be replaced. I could have done that while in there, but overlooked it. I have had experiences with other computer/digital types of equipment that started acting weird when that battery needed to be replaced. How about that?

            Thanks,

            Brian

I just found a thread on the TiVo Community Forum - started on 11-9-2012 - which has a whole bunch of reports of the same kind of frequent reboots, over the last several days, as those which I am experiencing.

This is looking a lot less like my hardware problem and more like a DTV service issue.

We agree; likely a DIRECTV issue.
