What is failing?

I have a Series 3, antenna connection. Playback is stalling out, but not stuttering as it does when there has been a reception problem.

Do I have a failing drive? Are there any tools built in for diagnosing a drive problem.

If it is failing, is there a way to clone it to a new drive before it dies? I know how to clone Windows drives; I do it regularly.

There are Linux tools for drives copying here:

http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com

But if the drive is failing, it just isn't always possible to get a good copy.
